People found a "shaggy monster" in a bag: the enormous creature with tangles instead of fur turned out not to be a dog.

It's heartbreaking to imagine what would have happened if volunteers hadn't found the overweight cat abandoned in the park. She was so large that the people who discovered her initially thought she was a dog sitting inside the bag. Thankfully, the caring volunteers were there to rescue her and provide the care and attention she needed.

It's truly distressing to think about how they let the poor cat reach such a terrible condition and then simply dumped her in the park inside an old sports bag.

The cat was in no condition to care for herself, and it's unlikely that we will ever know who was the owner of Big Bertha, as she was named at the shelter. But it's evident that her owner kept feeding her excessively. Bertha's weight reached 12 kg. The reasons behind why they took her to the park after such "overfeeding" remain a mystery.

It's heartbreaking to learn that the cat wasn't even old; the veterinarian estimated her age to be around two years. Her fur was in a deplorable condition, all tangled and matted, requiring a complete shave.

After the shave, Big Bertha "lost" 300 grams in weight.

Volunteers at the shelter, along with veterinarians, started a weight loss marathon for her. They developed a gentle diet to ensure her weight would decrease gradually. They also introduced physical exercises since the cat could hardly move due to her condition.

Over the course of a few months, Bertha lost 3.5 kg. After her transformation, she was adopted by a new owner named Emma. Emma promises to stick to proper feeding and provide her with physical activity. Together, they have a long journey ahead towards Bertha's recovery.

Obesity is harmful to cats, and unfortunately, many pet owners unknowingly cause significant harm by overfeeding their pets out of love, offering them treats and goodies without realizing the consequences.

An overfed animal can only lie down and sleep, not living a full life. A sad fact is that cases of abandoning domestic animals on the streets have increased. Charitable organizations claim that this is due to the global crisis and the rising cost of living.
