Few of us know the power of choice and few of us practice it properly. Precisely because it is a power of such force, which defines so many fundamental aspects of a person's life, with the pains and delights of its consequences, most people feel more comfortable and confident giving opinions about other people's lives than deciding about their own affairs.

The reason for this is the various direct effects that the decisions we make invariably have on us. Las diferentes formas de ser y vivir de otros pueblos amplían nuestra comprensión de la vida. Sin embargo, un viaje también es una buena prueba. Si al cabo de unos días no echamos de menos nuestro hogar, es una señal inequívoca de que el viaje puede suponer una huida de la prisión en la que se ha convertido nuestro hogar. Un hogar debería ser un lugar sagrado de paz y bienestar y no un lugar de opresión y angustia.

Pocos conocemos el poder de la elección y pocos lo practicamos adecuadamente. Precisamente porque es un poder de tanta fuerza, que define tantos aspectos fundamentales de la vida de una persona, con las penas y las delicias de sus consecuencias, la mayoría de la gente se siente más cómoda y segura opinando sobre la vida de los demás que decidiendo sobre sus propios asuntos.

La razón de ello son los diversos efectos directos que las decisiones que tomamos tienen invariablemente sobre nosotros. Por ello, nos sentimos más seguros con las decisiones sobre la vida de los demás; en cambio, tenemos muchas dudas y dificultades sobre las elecciones que hacen sobre nuestra propia vida.

Elegir por el otro siempre nos parecerá más fácil porque no cargamos con el posible peso de una decisión equivocada. A grandes rasgos, la factura la pagará el otro. Irónicamente, las personas a las que más les gusta opinar sobre las elecciones de los demás son las más inseguras sobre las decisiones relevantes para su propia vida.
