Garmin has introduced a bicycle camera and a light with radar that warns of approaching vehicles from behind.

The camera starts filming the moment a car is detected and protects the video from being deleted if a collision or a fall happens.

Traffic rules vary, but countries most often require cyclists to ride on the roads with cars if there is no bike path nearby.

At the same time, cyclists are less protected than the driver and passengers of the car during a collision,

In order to avoid this, city halls build bike lanes and separate the flow of cars and bicycles.

There are also devices that make cars more noticeable to the cyclist. The simplest of them is a mirror on the steering wheel.

A more technological option is a radar or a flashlight with an integrated radar, which the Garmin company has been producing for several years.

Now Garmin has introduced Varia RCT715, a new model that, in addition to radar and a flashlight, is equipped with a camera to record trips and possible collisions.

The device is attached to the seatpost and it syncs with a compatible bike computer or app.

The radar detects cars at a distance of 140 meters and shows their approximate location.

If there are several cars at this distance, the location of each of them will be displayed on the screen.

At the same time, the camera is synchronized with the radar and warns the cyclist with a sound or vibration.

The camera acts as a DVR and can either shoot video all the time right after it is turned on, or start shooting at the moment the car is detected and record a minute after that.

Varia RCT715 also has an option to record collisions: if the accelerometer detects a fall, then shooting is automatically activated.

The resulting file is saved separately and protected from overwriting.

If the shooting was already working, fragments before and after the fall get into the file.

The whole gadget cost is $399. The camera shoots in 1080p at 30fps and has a 140-degree field of view.

At maximum brightness, using a radar and constant video recording, the device works up to for 4 hours.
