Hello Everyone,

I am so bored to pass my home quarantine. So I planed to make some Documentary about different kind of Technical Things. As well as Today I am going to writing my Documentary about Driverless Car.

What is a driverless car?

The term ‘driverless’ refers to all vehicles which have higher levels of automation, beginning at the point where a driver may not need their hands on the steering wheel, but is ready to take over control, right through to where a vehicle doesn’t need a driver and may not even have a steering wheel.

History

In GM’s 1939 exhibit, Norman Bel Geddes created the first self-driving car, which was an electric vehicle guided by radio-controlled electromagnetic fields generated with magnetized metal spikes embedded in the roadway. By 1958, General Motors had made this concept a reality. The car’s front end was embedded with sensors called pick-up coils that could detect the current flowing through a wire embedded in the road. The current could be manipulated to tell the vehicle to move the steering wheel left or right.
In 1977, the Japanese improved upon this idea, using a camera system that relayed data to a computer to process images of the road. However, this vehicle could only travel at speeds below 20 mph. The improvement came from the Germans a decade later in the form of the VaMoRs, a vehicle outfitted with cameras that could drive itself safely at 56 mph. As technology improved, so did self-driving vehicles’ ability to detect and react to their environment.

The first form of a self driving cars, powered by a radio antennae, was developed almost a century ago, in 1925.

Evolution of Self-Driving Cars

  • Idea captured human imagination since 1930.
  • Introduced first recorded concept on 1939.
  • Realization of General Motors by ‘Normal Bel Geddes’ in 1958.
  • Remote controlled device that guided the car
  • Improvements on GM’s self-driving car by image data processing using cameras linked to computer by Tsukuba Mechanical Engineering Lab.
  • Collaboration of Daimler and Mercedes Benz on a project called VaMoRs.
  • 5-ton Mercedes Benz van equipped with cameras and other sensors.
  • Share data with on-board computer to allow it to drive the car unassisted Tesla Motors started by Elon Musk 2003, with intentions of an all-electric, clean and energy-efficient vehicle manufacturer.
  • Released AEV coupe on 2012, which had 7,376 ft-lb of torque, can do 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250+ mph.
  • Hardware was included by Tesla starting from 2014.
  • An innovation strategy development was funded from 2016 to 2018 by European Commission for connected and automated driving through the
    Coordination Actions CARTRE and SCOUT.
  • In 2017, Audi stated that its latest A8 would be automated at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour using its "Audi AI“.
  • It claimed to be the first production car to reach Level 3 automated driving.
  • Audi would be the first manufacturer to use laser scanners in addition to cameras and ultrasonic sensors for their system.
