These plants have one characteristic in common: the flower is actually an inflorescence, called a cocoon, made up of the ligulate flowers on the outside, which are generally mistaken for petals, and the tubular flowers in the center. The inflorescences are yellow or orange with a characteristic aromatic smell.

Only Arnica Montana and Arnica Chamissonis have medicinal value. Dell Arnica can be used in various parts: flowers, rhizome, root, which are rich in flavonoids, triterpenes, essential oil, polysaccharides, carotenoids, sesquiterpene lactones with anti-inflammatory action. Its properties have made it a medicinal remedy, in human and veterinary herbal medicine, as well as in homeopathy. It is also used as a raw material for cosmetics and some liqueurs.
🌱Arnica, a flower in mountain traditions
In the past, its leaves were smoked as a substitute for tobacco and its alcoholic extracts were inhaled by those who wanted to quit smoking. Among mountaineers, it was a highly prized remedy for severe trauma.

🍃But Arnica Montana was probably also known in ancient times. In the 19th century, it was described in the pharmacopoeias as a remedy for nervous conditions and concussions resulting from falls or blows to the head.
To date, arnica is used almost exclusively for external use. There are oils, creams, ointments or gels commercially available, which present in the formulation the extract of arnica alone or associated with other plants with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

It is particularly effective against bruises due to contusions and sprains, but also against edema resulting from surgical operations.

In fact, it facilitates the reabsorption of blood or serum spills, which occur in the event of trauma thanks to its revulsive properties, which stimulate blood circulation in the most superficial layers of the skin. For this reason, arnica oil is effective in combating disorders related to the circulatory system, such as capillary fragility and varicose veins. In case of a cold, a good arnica oil, if massaged into the hands and feet, helps to reactivate microcirculation.

Arnica, a friend of athletes
Arnica is highly appreciated by athletes, who use oil to massage even preventively, before exercise. In fact, Arnica is useful for protecting muscles, joints, and tendons. It is a valuable aid in case of muscle strains.

It is an excellent anti-fatigue remedy, also indicated to facilitate rest after great physical effort. In homeopathy it is used for insomnia after overwork, which causes a sensation of pain and the perception of discomfort in bed.
