What causes drug resistance?

Have you noticed that most often when we treat Typhoid fever with Ciprofloxacine, it always comes back?

Have you noticed that there are some Malaria medications that do not seem to work again?

This is a problem called 𝗗𝗿𝘂𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. Drug resistance is a situation where disease causing microorganisms understand how a particular drug acts, and then outsmarts the drug.

It occurs when we expose these microorganisms to a dose of the drug that is not large enough to kill off the microorganisms such as when you fall sick and take only part of the prescribed medication.

When you take medication and stop immediately you are feeling better, it is damaging to both you and others because in the long run, the organism that caused that sickness will no longer respond when treated with the medication you exposed it to. And when the disease spreads from you to another person, it is only the resistant organism that is spreading.

So, when you fall sick and medications are prescribed to you, ensure to take them till the end even if you feel better.

Have a beautiful week ahead.
