AGRI-BUSINESS ENTERPRISES

Agri business combines the words "a" and "es" comed in 1957 by John Davis and Ray Goldberg and refers to any business related to agricultural production.

Agribusiness enterprises refer to business units which are engaged in farming and farming related commercial activities. They deal with production, processing and distribution of agricultural products

Agribusiness enterprises broad term, and includes the following;

1. Manufacturers of farm machinery. For eg. John Deere, Escorts

2. Food processing companies. For eg, dairy, bakery, poultry, fisheries, grain processing etc.

3. Companies providing seeds, agrichemicals, insecticides and fertilizers for agriculture, For
   eg. Deepak Nitrate, Kaveri seeds, DuPont, Mosanto etc.

4. Farming, including contract farming.

5. Companies making biofuels (biogas, biodiesel, bioethanol) and animal feed

6. Companies carrying out distribution and retailing activities of agricultural produce

7. Agro-tourism companies Ambaban, Anuradha, Anandmata etc.)

8. Farmer's Cooperatives

DEFINITION OF AGRI-BUSINESS

According to Davis, "Agri-business refers to the sum of all farm supplies production operations on the farm, and the storage, processing, and distribution of farm commodities and items made from them."

The agribusiness system consists of five sub-systems

1. The inputs sub-system (for eg. seeds, fertilizers, tools and equipment, machinery and even credit)

2. The production sub-system (Production of food-grains and other agricultural products. Some inputs are directly used for production or as end product)

3. The processing sub-system (Procurement of raw agricultural goods and process them into food products desired by customers)

4. The marketing sub-system (Transfer of agricultural commodities from source to end user)

5. The support sub-system (Governmental and non-governmental agencies, commercial associations, banks and financing institutions, research organizations, co-operatives which provide services like finance, training etc.)

1. Decreasing land holdings	Promoting larger role to farmers organizations or cooperatives
2. Meeting food demand	Forging partnerships with large companies
3 Government regulations	Establishing more conducive policy environment for agribusiness
4. Low farm income	Amendment of the APMC Act
5. Technical literacy	Providing skills and training to farmers
6. Availability of credit	Developing efficient warehousing/cold storage facilities
7. Weak infrastructure	Government initiatives implementation
8. Rising prices of agricultural inputs	Favorable policy and increasing Minimum Support Price (MSP)
