What Is Heliculture?

Heliculture is considered the practice of rearing snails, which are solely for human consumption. Snail farming, which is considered as heliculture, is also a form of animal husbandry, that has to do with raising snails for escargot marketing and mainly for food.

Heliculture is one of the processes I consider best for the conservation of different species of snails. Snail 🐌 rearing, which is considered heliculture, is very good because snails provide man with iron, protein, and other vitamins which are required by the body for growth.

What Are The Requirements For Snail Farming?

There are several requirements that need to be considered in the course of venturing into snail farming, and they are

  • Climate: snails are known to easily thrive in humid environments that possess temperatures between 15=C and 25°C.

  • Shade: It is important to note that shading areas are the best to ensure the survival of snails, they are not supposed to be exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Ventilation: snails are one of the animals that require ventilation for survival, this helps to prevent fungal growth.

  • Closure: This is to say that snails need to be raised in good areas like outdoor pens and greenhouses that help to protect them from predators like birds, rodents, and some domestic animals.

  • Food & Calcium: snails require leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables for survival, and also, for snails to continue to live, they require calcium from oyster shells and crushed eggshells that aid in supporting shell development.

In the course of snail farming, you will definitely enjoy the income you make, but nevertheless, there are also challenges which can be faced during heliculture. Some of the challenges that can be encountered during the process of heliculture are;

  • Climate control: snails are known to be very sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations that can equally affect their health and growth.

  • Pest and predators: snails are known to be very vulnerable to pests and predators like insects, rodents, and birds, because they are capable of killing them.

  • Nutrition: making sure that we effectively meet the feeding demands of snails can actually be quite challenging, as it can be difficult to adequately provide the required nutrients for snails' survival.
