"Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #2"

Testing the soil makes farmers make a good production of crops each year. I will say that soil erosion and leaching have been some of the agricultural disasters that lead to the low yield of crops every year. As a farmer, you must experience these two things, and you are also expected to know its cause and prevention.

What is the importance of soil testing in agriculture?

Whenever you are talking about the importance of a term without its meaning, it will not make sense. I would like to define the term soil testing.

Soil testing can be seen as an agricultural act that has to do with the testing of the soil by taking samples of the soil from various areas of the land and also knowing if the soil is at the normal range of what soil is supposed to be.

Here are the various importance of soil testing in agriculture.

  1. Soil testing ensures that our environment is always protected from bad soil, which can cause diseases and lead to low yields of crops; it also helps farmers save time, money, and energy.

  2. The act of making sure that the soil is tested helps to improve and optimize the production of crops by farmers. This also helps the farmers to know the soil structure, texture, nutrient cycle, etc.

  3. Soil testing enables farmers to be able to diagnose the issues or diseases that are destroying the yield of crops, which may be the lack of a drainage system; this then makes farmers have a good harvest.

  4. Soil testing lets farmers fully know the likes and dislikes of the crops they cultivate; it lets them know the kind of soil, fertilizers, insecticides, and pesticides to make use of to ensure good productivity of crops.

  5. Soil testing also makes sure that the crops are healthy by testing the soil to know if the crop accepts it or not.

Define Soil Erosion and Soil Leaching.

Soil erosion is one of the factors which affect the production of crops l, likewise leaching. Here are their definitions.

SOIL EROSION

Soil erosion can be defined as the gradual washing away of the topmost layer of the soil by the following agents which are water, wind, and air. This can be either natural or caused by man's day-to-day activities; soil erosion causes water population in the environment.

SOIL LEACHING

Soil leaching can be defined as the nutrients of the soil are removed by water. It is also a process in which the contents are contained in the soil through percolation by water.

What importance is crop rotation in farming?

Let's begin with the definition of crop rotation.

Crop rotation can be referred to as a process of cultivating different kinds of crops on the same piece of land every year to ensure that the fertility of the soil remains active for farming activities.

Here are the following importance of crop rotation in agriculture/farming.

  • Crop rotation is an agricultural activity that helps to reduce the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides to improve crop production.

  • Some crops can kill or keep pests and diseases; this then helps to control or rotate the cycle of the pests and diseases on the farm.

  • Crop rotation helps to make the soil resistant to erosion and leaching of the soil.

  • crop rotation is to improve the fertility and structure of the soil through the cultivation of several crops, which can increase the effectiveness of the soil, thereby improving its contents.

  • Crop rotation helps to increase and improve the soil help because certain crops have nutritional value they give to the soil, e.g., legumes help to fix nitrogen in the soil. One example of legumes is groundnut.

In your own words, define the following terms;

a. Yield

The agricultural term yield can be defined as the total amount of agricultural produce which are produced in every sector of land.

b. Tillage

Tillage can be defined as a farming process that involves the mixing and turning of the soil for the preparation of the plating season.

c. Grazing

Grazing can be defined as the act in which live stocks are allowed outdoors to roam around for the consumption of grasses and other wild vegetation.

d. Biodiversity

Biodiversity can be referred to as an agricultural activity in which the different kinds of life in agriculture, which are animals, plants, and microorganisms are used.

e. Food Security

Food security, as an agricultural term, can be defined as the act of conserving food to promote physical and economic access to make food available for the nation.
