Taraxacum officinale sprouts from (usually unbranched) taproots and generates 470 hollow, leafless flower stems that range in height from 5 to 70 centimetres (2 to 28 inches), but can occasionally reach 70 cm (28 inches). The flower heads are held on stalks that may be straight or slack, have a violet hue, and are at least as tall as the foliage. The leaves have either unwinged or narrowly winged petioles, and the foliage may grow vertically or horizontally. The stems may have no hairs at all or rather sparingly. The leaves of the plant are completely basal, the latex is milky, and each flowering stalk contains a single flower head with no bracts. The florets, which are the blooms in the yellow flower heads, are all ligulate and devoid of receptacle bracts.
