Hello my friends in Steem Argentina !! Today I like to share about one of the unique cultural thing in India. It is "Rakhi-bandhan".

This occasion is celebrated across India among the Hindus. It is celebrated on the purnima (full moon) day of Shravan month of the hindu calender. Religiously, this is celebrated in between brother and sister.

The word "Rakhi-bandhan" is derived from "Raksha-bandhan". 'Raksha' means protection or care. 'Bandhan' means bond or bonding. Hence, the work "Raksha-bandhan" literally translate to "Bonding of protection".

In this day, the sisters tie a rakhi in their brothers' hand. Rakhi is usually made by colored thread and decorated with flowers, decorative items, small show-pieces etc. As a return of the rakhi, the brothers take oath to protect their sisters and gift her sweets, chocolates or anything that she will like and adore. The occasion usually ends with the brother-sister has a celebration meal along with the entire family.

I do not have any sister in family. However, there is a girl in my workplace who is very close to me and we call each other as brother-sister. Her name is Tapasri. She ties rakhi in my hand since we got to know each other. We meet on the rakhi day, she ties me rakhi and then we spend the entire day together.

However, due to the spread of COVID-19, we were unable to meet last year. This year, the rakhi is on 22-August-2021. We hope to meet that day.

Apart from the bonding between brothers and sisters, the rakhibandhan once used for bonding between two religious communities in Bengal. In 1905, the british government decided to divide the bengal province into two part - Muslim dominated east-bengal and Hindu-dominated west-bengal. They tried to break the communal harmony between the Hindu and the Muslim communities. India's national poet Rabindranath Tagore took the initiative to arrange rakhibandhan between Hindu and Muslim people. Ultimately, the british government had to withdraw the partition of bengal.
