Decentralized Domain Names

What are Blockchain Domains? 

If you type in the IP address 172.217.10.14 into the address bar of your web browser and enter, you would be taken to the google website. The IP address 172.217.10.14 is what identifies google and it is so with all other websites with their own unique IP addresses. Because it would be almost impossible for humans to remember the IP addresses of these websites, the Domain Name System was developed, which allots unique domain names to each of these IP addresses and resolves these names to the IP Addresses when users type in the domain names in lieu of the IP addresses. 

Now imagine you can do the same with resolving unique blockchain names to wallet addresses. Thus instead of giving someone your wallet address with long hexadecimal text, you can now give a simple human readable name such as name.crypto, name.zil or name.rsk. 

Besides hosting wallet addresses, these blockchain names can also be used to host web content of decentralized sites and identify other decentralized resources. 

Personally I would prefer to call these domains Decentralized Domains instead of Blockchain Domains because these domain can equally be used in all decentralized environments. Blockchain is just one type of decentralization. 

Advantages of Decentralized Domains

• These domains are not regulated by ICANN and are therefore independent of ICANN and DNS. 
• They are uncensorable. 
• Human readable ID for crypto wallets. 
• Some are issued for a one time fee and others follow the traditional domain renewal system. 
• They can be transferred to another owner easily, usually in less than a minute. 
• Name resolution is done by the browser and not DNS.

Disadvantages of Decentralized Domains

• No central body controlling the issuance of domain name and there is no control on registration. Anyone can issue first level decentralized domains and anyone can register any domain name. These will pose problems for Trademark owners and companies may not adopt these system readily. 
• You will need to install specific browser extension for it to work on browsers supporting it.
