Week#2 Contest : My garden & crops
Hi Steemians! Here with you is @avalanch and it feels good to be part this community that aims to promote the beauty of of our natural environment and micro farms/gardening. Making use of the little spaces we have in environment for Agriculture would contribute to more food production which would help to reduce hunger in our society.
Today, I would be sharing with you how I make use of the little space in my home, for ginger farm/garden.
Ginger is a herbaceous flowering plant that produces roots as a crop. It originated from the southern China and has now spread to other parts of the world like India, Thailand, Nigeria, Indonesia, and the Americas. It could be cultivated for domestic use or for commercial supplies depending on the capacity of the farmer. Ginger is a profitable Agriculture business venture that could generate billions of dollars. This is due to its high demand owing to its wide industrial applications and health benefits.

To plant ginger, you make use of the rhizomes seeds for to plant . The size of the rhizomes has much to do with how fast the ginger will grow, then be harvested and sold. The larger rhizome size would be fast to grow and be harvested as early as possible.
Furthermore, arrangement should be made for irrigation if planting is during the dry season. This will help to promote its growth during the dry season. It more advisable to Cary out planting during the rainy season.
After the land is been ploughed and ready, Start planting the seeds into the soil. Here in Africa to be precise, southeastern Nigeria, starts from April and May when it must have started to rain.
Ginger could actually contribute to grow the economy as there is a global demand for it. There are large commercial ginger farmers that are engaged in producing ginger for exports. When it is exported, they are paid in foreign currency which now strengthen the local currency and generates income as tax for the government.
Also, since they are engaged in large commercial production, it creates employment in the sector by hiring workers who would be paid for their production services.
It is necessary to know that farmers do treat the ginger seed before planting it. The treatment it is done either by using hot water, smoking the seed. The seed smoking should be done before storing it.
While the seeds have undergone proper treatment and storage, the farmer ensures that the farmland is been ploughed or tilled
Another step to ensure that the ginger are protected from diseases is by weeding. There are weeds that grow along with the ginger and compete with the ginger for the nutrients in the soil. The weeds even grow faster than the ginger to stifle their growth and attract insects that could even eat off the ginger from its base. So weeding go along way to prevent the disease and eliminate unhealthy competition between the weeds and the ginger.

In my country, ginger is quite expensive these days, so it's preferable if we can grow it ourselves. I'll try it; I used to have some ginger plants and collect them, but they lost. Thank you for inviting me.
