'I love you', those were the two words Nene let take her future away.
We weren't close friends at all you see, but still Nene's story brought us together, Nene was a quirky 16 year old preparing for her ss3 waec when I took notice of her.
Her mother sold Abacha Near our house, so I'd often see her whenever I was out of my house. During the holidays and after I graduated from school I began to see her more frequently. Nene didn't some of the luxury I had, but I was happy she got an education.
Nene was one of those girls who developed faster than her peers and so by the age of 16 she already had men hollering at her and stopping at her mum's shop disguised as customers only to sweet talk her. When these changes arrived Nene's mother gave her the same outdated advise 'Be careful of men, No follow man if you carry belle enter my house you go find the papa'
'If you like open your leg na you go bear am' she obeyed her mother as best as she could but still she needed to understand the word sex.
A few months into the holiday, construction started on the plot of land near their shop. It was there she met Steven a 22 year old bricklayer he was barely done with university the devil came in that form, Steven toasted her for a while and then she gave in after he uttered he words 'I love you'. Nene was over the moon and to commemorate that occasion Steven took her behind the construction site and took away her childhood.
It was weeks after we heard wailing from Nene's mother's shop, it was then we knew that the much much feared had happened.
It had happened and there was nothing she could do, she shouted and screamed telling Nene she had done nothing to deserve the shame and ridicule she had brought down up on her.
With little advise to go on but the empty one of her mother she left her innocence behind, who do I blame?
I don't blame Nene, I blame her mother and I blame the bricklayer, Yes! Because her mother should have done more, no one else would teach her daughter but her for the society we live in everyone shy's away from the topic of sexual awareness but what can I say it's the way we see it for society won't tell us, neither will the school what we learn we learn from peers and as we go on in life, So the fault lies with everyone.
