Good day steemians and welcome to season 8 week 1 of the steemit engagement challenge. The challenge for the columbia-original community talks about the value of life. Let’s get right into it :)

The concept of death penalty is one I've not been able to fully fathom and justify. This issue has been wildly debated, is it justifiable? is it right?...lots of points have been tendered to this effect. However, on this issue. I disagree entirely with the death penalty and I'd go on to air my points to this effect.
The principle and existence of human life are one that should be respected and upheld at all times and to this effect, I strongly believe no one should have the right to end another's life. Now when I tender this point, the issues of criminals and murderers would always come into play. However, i dont see how taking the life of a criminal (a murderer for example) changes anything. It doesn't bring his/her victim back to life, neither does it change what happens. In reality, it's a waste of life. It's what i call, "to murder a murderer", they're both the same offense, just that one is under the veil of legality.
Another particular issue of concern with death penalties, especially one that constantly comes up when you live in a third-world country just like mine... Nigeria. The issue of wrongful accusations and convictions.
There are myriad cases where a person was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death only for their cases to be exonerated later. Now, the innocence of the person has been proven but his/her life can't be restored.
Death penalties are a part of the law in my country, Nigeria. To answer the question "do I think it should be implemented"?
NO!
A big one. Some may say if this measure is abolished, it may result in a rise in crime. However, I don't see the use of the death penalty as effective. This is because it's not a significant factor in the prevention or reduction of crimes. A better approach would be to target the root cause of these crimes "poverty, hunger, education, etc".
At the end of it all, the death penalty is akin to an ouroboros, in that it is the same as murdering a murderer but just under the veil of legality. The state-sanctioned killing of a human being is a deeply troubling practice, and it undermines the basic human right to life.
There was a case involving a high court in Nigeria sentencing a Danish citizen, Peter Nielsen, to death by hanging for the murder of his Nigerian wife and their young daughter in 2018.
The verdict was announced by Justice Bolanle Okikiolu-Ighile of the Lagos high court after a hearing that lasted over five hours. Nielsen's conviction was based on evidence from an autopsy, which showed that his wife and daughter died of head injuries and suffocation. The analysis of his wife's fingertips also revealed that she had struggled to free herself from Nielsen's grip, and DNA found on her skin was consistent with Nielsen's.
The court's ruling was praised by rights activists who protested the murder. However, I can't seem to find a reasonable motive for Nielsen to have committed such against his wife and child. The dead are dead anyways and even if he were to be exonerated today, nothing would change.
I hope I've been able to air my views effectively on this issue :)
I invite my friends @mateenfatima and @alihussain07 to also come air their views.

Hello dear friend, a really controversial topic, I think no one has the absolute truth, we all have very different opinions based on our thoughts, our experience, our education, there are many nuances, the only thing I know is that whatever we think, that must be respected.
Remember not to place so long paragraphs in your publications, with a maximum of 6-7 lines is fine, so we do not saturate the entry.
