Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

in Writing & Reviews4 years ago (edited)

If you went to school a hundred years ago, you and your friends would probably be able to recite by heart several of the poems of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882). Born in Portland, Maine, Longfellow became the most popular poet of his day, at a time when it was common for families to entertain themselves by reading poetry
aloud in the evening by the fireside. (In fact, Longfellow was one of a group of writers known as the Fireside Poets.)

Many of Longfellow's poems were inspired by people and events in American history. Longfellow believed that one person's actions could make a difference.

Longfellow attended Bowdoin College, studied languages in Europe, and later taught Spanish, French, Italian, and
German at Harvard University. The poet received honorary degrees from Cambridge and Oxford Universities in England.

After his death, Longfellow was the first American to have a monument in the Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey, London.

Many believe that a life without a purpose is like a leaf tossing in the wind. Each person should be motivated by a goal or a purpose.

What is your purpose in life?
