Known as a womanizer, Jamie Randall was fired from a Pittsburgh-based electronics business in 1996 after having sexual relations with his boss's girlfriend. He accepts a position as a pharmaceutical sales representative at the urging of his affluent brother, Josh.

Jamie begins working for Pfizer after finishing a training program sponsored by the company. He is in charge of persuading physicians to prescribe Zoloft to their patients. Unfortunately, Bruce, his regional supervisor, does not accept him since he sees him as a means of getting into the Chicago market. To encourage other physicians to follow Dr. Stan Knight's lead, Bruce recommends switching from Prozac to Zoloft as a first step. When Jamie is not sneaking Prozac samples out the back door, he spends his time socializing with Dr. Knight's female colleagues.

Jamie ultimately sees Knight examine Maggie Murdock, one of his patients with early-onset Parkinson's disease. Jamie is impressed by what he sees. When one of Jamie Knight's employees offers Maggie his phone number, Maggie is immediately taken.

A date with one another leads to the realization that neither of them is ready for a long-term relationship, so they begin having more casual sex with one another. Following the discovery that Jamie has thrown away all of his sample tablets by Trey Hannigan, the top-selling Prozac salesperson attacks Jamie in the parking lot. MCKENNA, the CEO of a pharmaceutical business, warns Jamie that there has been conjecture about his company's participation in developing an erectile dysfunction medicine. Bruce confirms that Viagra will be available for purchase shortly.

Jamie starts selling Viagra right away and rapidly becomes a great hit. Maggie declines his offer of a meaningful relationship, despite his wish to have one with her. He comes up to her while she assists a group of elderly travelers on a bus headed for Canada searching for low-cost prescription medications. Despite Maggie's constant insistence, Jaime refuses to go and ends up spending the night at the bus station. Following a medical meeting, Maggie and Jamie take some time to relax at a Parkinson's support group on the outskirts of town. When Jamie accepts her offer, he comes face to face with a man whose wife is critically ill and has requested Jamie's assistance. During his explanation of what cancer would do to her in the long run, the other man begs him not to leave her. As a result of their experience, Maggie professes her affection for Jamie. As part of his Parkinson's disease study, he refers Maggie to several specialists throughout the country who will administer different tests to ascertain whether or not she has the condition. They fail to attend a previously planned session, prompting Jamie to lose his cool. She leaves Jamie because she feels he is only interested in her if it is feasible for him to find a cure for her.

After a Knight party, Jamie takes Viagra and finds himself in a threesome with two other ladies. Josh is also invited, but he declines to go. As soon as he wakes up, he runs to the hospital after suffering an unusually uncomfortable reaction. A few minutes later, while on his way to the restaurant, he runs into Maggie, who is out with her date at the time. Jamie, according to Bruce, has been reassigned to the Chicago location of the company.

While they are packing, Jamie puts a VHS tape containing a clip of him and Maggie discussing their lives. Although he has achieved his goal, his employer informs him that she has left the nation searching for low-cost prescription drugs. Jamie hunts her down and confesses his feelings for her to her face-to-face. She sobs and collapses to the ground as she professes her feelings for him. Instead of taking a post at a medical school in Chicago, Jamie decides to enroll at the University of Pittsburgh to be closer to his mother and sister.
