Once open a time , the was a serious famine and hunger strike in the land named okokobioko, where every single living thing is trying to survive hunger in the land, there was a very big party going to be held in the heaven where the birds where invited as guest in the occasion, in the occasion there where a lot of merriment, food and drink to consume and enjoy, so when Mr. Tortoise heard about the great occasion going to take place soon and he prepare and consulted the Birds for their assistance to allow him to embark the the journey with them. After series of discussion of agreement and disagreement then agreement was reached to let Mr. tortoise to go with them since he is eloquent in speaking.

On the appointed deal day all the birds gathered and donated there feather to tortoise for him to be able to fly along side with them, before they take there leave, as smart as Mr. Tortoise is he suggested to them to bear a name to avoid confusion after taking there names one after the other Mr. Tortoise was the last to make is name known so them where he name himself (ALL OF US) and he make sure that they all stick and bear their names, they where so happy for such initiative.
As they arrived at the party ground there where a lot to merry about, with food and drink so plenty, when each package of food is presented to the animals, then the host will ask? them who have this food and packages and they guests of the occasion will reply. him IS ALL OF US. The birds gathered and started observing Mr. Tortoise claiming all their share, food packages on to the name he bears his name by taking they away the food packages shares made for them, the birds where angry and furious while the the Host thought it was the culture for one to accumulate all, so after the feast they all gathered to leave with that angry mind of the birds they all decided to collected all their feathers from him and left without any thing because they where betrayed, so Mr. Tortoise was stranded in heaven after spending some time.
A bird by name Ostrich left behind decided to help him out in order to tell his family about his present condition he is into, the two reach an agreement to tell his wife to bring out all their foams out side and even borrow from their neighbors for him to jump and land on it, since he have no feather left with him fly down.
So when Ostrich got home he met his wife Aim (tortoise's wife) and told her to bring out and arrange all their metallic properties outside both their iron bed iron pot knife and all sort of weapons he lied to Mr. Tortoies's wife that his husband Mr Tortoise is going to throw down a very big fat animal down and his wife did as Ostrich told her, she even added pestle, tripod, axes mortar and even borrow from their neighbors various heavy metals.
After that Mr. tortoise saw that the ground where filled with materials without seeing things clearly and he assumed that things have being set as he told Ostrich, and he got ready and jump from that far distance Pheeeeeeeeew and he landed his back on the sharp metals and got brutally wooded and his back shell break into pieces and scatter all over the ground.
His wife saw what happened and ran out and started shouting and crying for help and Mr. Snail heard her cry from the neighboring hood and came out and his wife ask Mr. Snail to help her and gum back her husband's shell that his husband will pay back later once he is fit, but Mr. snail refused knowing that Mr. Tortoise will not pay him back and his wife persist and Mr. snail agreed after all promises made by Mr tortoise's wife and he started gumming together all the broken shell which take him a month and to finish. and after the treatment Tortoise was grateful for his service, Mr Snail was waiting for his payment and Mr tortoises told him that he have to make his back smooth as it was before not cracked before payment.
THAT IS WHY TORTOISES TILL TODAY HAVE A CRACKED SHELL
