La vida de Vera dio un giro cuando pensaba tenerlo todo bajo control, estaba recién jubilada con una carrera llena éxitos, y uno hijos ya profesionales y trabajando.

Vera's life took a turn when she thought she had everything under control, she was recently retired with a successful career, and one child already professional and working.

Un día, fue a visitar a su madre, una señora de tercera edad, quien también había hecho de su familia, gente de buen proceder. La hoy abuela, se dedicó en cuerpo y alma a su hogar, junto a un esposo dedicado a trabajar y ella en los menesteres de la crianza y administración de su hogar.

One day, she went to visit her mother, an elderly lady, who had also made of her family, people of good behavior. Today's grandmother devoted herself body and soul to her home, with a husband dedicated to work and herself to the tasks of raising and managing her home.

Cuando saludó a su mamá, extrañamente, ésta le pidió la bendición, costumbre en su país con la que saludan los hijos a sus padres. Ya ella, en otra ocasiones, había notado que su mamá olvidaba ciertas cosas básicas, como dónde colocar las tazas, o se mostraba confusa, sin embargo atribuyéndolo a la edad, y al encierro por la pandemia, no le prestó mucha atención al asunto.

When she greeted her mother, strangely, she asked for her mother's blessing, a custom in her country with which children greet their parents. On other occasions, she had already noticed that her mother forgot certain basic things, such as where to place the cups, or was confused, however, attributing it to her age and the confinement due to the pandemic, she did not pay much attention to the matter.

Siguiendo la conversación, notó cómo su mamá se refería a ella, su hija, como si fuera su propia madre. Eso fue un primer golpe muy duro para Vera, ya había escuchado del temible Alzheimer y de la Demencia senil, pero nunca pensó que podía tocarle de cerca.

Following the conversation, she noticed how her mother referred to her, her daughter, as if she were her own mother. That was a very hard first blow for Vera, she had already heard of the dreaded Alzheimer's and senile dementia, but she never thought it could touch her closely.

Había tenido la ocasión, en su trabajo como docente orientadora, de apoyar a varios estudiantes diagnosticados, con síndrome del espectro autista, y siempre estaba rodeada en sus aulas de clases de Dinosaurios, de estaciones de trenes de varios tamaños, en los que ellos construían un mundo hermoso en su día a día. Sin embargo, poco sabía del trato hacia situaciones psicológicas asociadas a las personas de edad avanzada.

She had had the opportunity, in her work as a guidance teacher, to support several students diagnosed with autism spectrum syndrome, and she was always surrounded in her classrooms by Dinosaurs, train stations of various sizes, in which they built a beautiful world in their daily lives. However, little did she know about dealing with psychological situations associated with the elderly

Vera decidió documentarse y buscar asesoría profesional. Tantos años trabajando en la docencia, que es un mundo en el que interactúas con toda una comunidad educativa: padres, docentes, estudiante y personal administrativo, le enseñó que debes prepararte y afrontar las situaciones que acontecen en la familia. Con la ayuda de sus hermanos, acudieron a un médico, neurólogo, y éste en equipo multidisciplinario con profesionales de la salud mental, atendieron a esta gran señora, no me agrada definirla como anciana, a ella no le gusta que la llamen vieja, hoy, en una edad avanzada y con dificultades con la memoria, y en otrora, mujer de fortaleza que levantó una bella familia.

Vera decided to do some research and seek professional advice. So many years working in teaching, which is a world in which you interact with an entire educational community: parents, teachers, students and administrative staff, taught her that you must prepare yourself and face the situations that occur in the family. With the help of her siblings, they went to a doctor, a neurologist, who in a multidisciplinary team with mental health professionals, attended this great lady, I do not like to define her as old, she does not like to be called old, today, at an advanced age and with memory difficulties, and in the past, a woman of strength who raised a beautiful family.

Vera nunca imaginó que los juegos de trenes y rompecabezas de Dinosaurios, serían unas herramientas tan valiosas para distraer y ejercitar la mente de su madre, con la que ocasionalmente y adicional a los crucigramas, se entretienen juntas. Ella sabe, que el camino no será tan fácil, y fue muy alertada que iba a necesitar trabajar en equipo con sus hermanos, porque estas disfunciones pueden traer consecuencias en los cuidadores. Vera se prometió a sí misma dar todo el amor a su madre y la protección que había con esmero, puesto en todos ellos. También se prometió considerar y aceptar toda la ayuda y recomendaciones que fueran dadas por los profesionales de la salud, que atienden el caso de su mamá.

Vera never imagined that the train games and Dinosaur puzzles would be such valuable tools to distract and exercise her mother's mind, with whom they occasionally entertain themselves together in addition to the crossword puzzles. She knows that the road will not be so easy, and she was warned that she would need to work as a team with her siblings, because these dysfunctions can have consequences for the caregivers. Vera promised herself to give all the love to her mother and the protection she had painstakingly put into all of them. She also promised herself to consider and accept all the help and recommendations given by the health professionals attending her mother's case.

Ojalá todos pudiéramos entender que somos sujetos de que nos ocurran estas situaciones imprevistas y dar aliento y apoyo en estos casos.

I wish we could all understand that we are subject to these unforeseen situations happening to us and give encouragement and support in these cases.
