My favorite character in this novel is :ugwoma_the widow of adigwu and the lover of uloko.
She is the major character in this play, because she played a very vital role in the novel
Ugwoma had a lover that she loved with the whole of her heart and wanted to spent the rest of her life with.But she was forced to marry another person because of poverty in her family,so she was forced to marry a person she didn't love in order to use the money for bride price to pay someone the parents where owing money.
But since the marriage was not from her heart she never enjoyed the union because she was forced into it she never loved the man.
Whenever ugwoma is making love with the husband instead of calling the husband name she always ends up calling the name of her lover that she was not allowed to marry.
Few years after their marriage ugwoma husband (Adigwu) died and ugwoma was accussed of killing her husband by her mother-in-law(Adibei)
The mother in law threaten to kill ugwoma for killing her son,but people encourages the mother in law that "people are born and people also die"and that is how life takes course but the mother in law still insisted on killing her.
So ugwoma was asked to mourn the husband for three months,and she was expected to dress in their mourning attire which she did but the mother inlaw was still complaining that ugwoma is not mourning the husband properly.
During ugwoma second month of mourning she secretly went to sleep with her lover (uloko)and this resulted to pregnancy but her friend (Anwasia)blamed her that this act of her is against her culture and tradition, that at least she should have waited for another month before letting another man into her matrimonial bed.she was also reminded that it is custome for the widow to marry the brother of the deceased,then ugwoma come back by saying uloko is not just another man,He is the Love of her life that's why she can't wait until the mourning period is over. Uloko enteres in and ugwoma breaks the news of her pregnancy to him,he was filled with joy and he said that now that his child is growing inside of her she will no longer marry Adigwu's brother again.
The villagers where angry at ugwoma's behavior even uloko mother that she has brought disappointment to the family.Ugwoma planned to run away before her pregnancy starts showing .
Ugwoma ran away with uloko her lover and ended up marrying each other.But later died together for the sake of their love for each other.
Moral lessons_
1.U can take the ship to the stream but u can't force it to drink from it.
2.No one can stop destiny
