International Workers' Day

International Workers' Day is celebrated on May 1st. On this day, citizens in many
countries throughout the world commemorate the contributions of employees and take
to the streets to demand equal wages and working standards.
International Workers' Day, also recognised as Labour Day in many nations and
mostly referred to as May Day, is an annual festival of workers and the working
classes organised by the global labour movement. It takes place on May Day every
year (1 May).
In recent years, the nature of the Labor Day celebration has shifted, especially in
major manufacturing cities where mass shows and large parades have become a
challenge. This shift of focus and medium of speech, on the other hand, is more
important. Newspapers, radio, and television broadcast speeches by prominent union
leaders, industrialists, academics, clerics, and government officials on Labor Day.
Labor's fundamental power contributed economically to the world's highest quality of
life and greatest development, bringing us closer to realising our common values of
financial and political democracy. As a result, it is fitting that the nation honours the
American worker on Labor Day, who is responsible for so much of the country's
strength, prosperity, and management. The International Day of Employment or
International Labour Day is a day devoted to employees and workers all around the
world. May Day honours workers and helps them to understand their rights. So
several countries observe International Labour Day on May First as a national
holiday. "Countries must put in place sound and effective workplace protection and
health programmes that will mitigate the hazards for all in the field of work in the
event of any health crises," said the International Labour Organization, a United
Nations body that operates toward establishing universal labour standards, in a study
published on World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

The History of International Workers’ Day.

In the late nineteenth century, trade union and labour organisations rose in tandem
with a slew of businesses, leading trade nationalists to designate specific days to
honour the people's labour. Labor Day, a September holiday in the United States and

Canada, was first suggested in the 1880s. Labor Day was formally founded in North
America many years later, in 1887.
In the other side, May 1st was selected as International Workers' Day to celebrate the
Haymarket incident in Chicago on May 4th, 1886, when an anonymous individual
hurled a grenade at the officers, who then opened fire on the labourers, killing four of
them. International Workers' Day is now observed on all seven continents.
Workers' Day was founded in the United States in 1889 by a coalition of socialist
organisations and labour unions. This was in commemoration of the Haymarket Riots
in Chicago in 1886, where a labour demonstration rally devolved into violence after a
grenade was thrown at officers. "At least eight civilians died as a consequence of the
unrest that day," as per history.com. "Eight militant labour leaders were arrested
through a shortage of proof against them."

According to the Central Labor Union's arrangements, the first Labor Day holiday
was observed on September 5, 1882, in New York City. One year later, on September
5, 1883, the Central Labor Union celebrated its second Labor Day holiday.
By 1894, 23 more countries had joined the celebration, and President Grover
Cleveland signed an order declaring the first Monday in September a public holiday
on June 28, 1894.

What is the aim of International Workers Day?

International Workers' Day is a day to honour working women and to raise awareness
of the importance of good jobs and equal wages. Millions of citizens have gained
fundamental protections and benefits as a result of employers' long-term efforts.
Minimum salaries have been set, working hours have been limited, and people are
entitled to compensated vacations and sick leave.
However, in many cases, working standards have deteriorated in recent years. Part-
time, short-term, and poorly paying employment has been increasingly popular since
the global financial crash of 2008, putting state pensions at risk. We've all witnessed
the emergence of the 'gig economy,' in which employers employ people on a
temporary basis for one or two jobs. This employees are not entitled to compensated

vacations, the minimum salary, or redundancy compensation. Solidarity for other
employers is just as essential as it has always been.

How is Workers’ Day celebrated now?

In various countries around the globe, celebrations and marches take different forms.
In countries including South Africa, Tunisia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and China, May 1
is a national holiday. On International Workers' Day, protests are held in a number of
nations, like France, Greece, Japan, Pakistan, the U.k., and the Usa. Workers' Day is a
day set aside for workers to take a break from their regular duties. It's a chance to
advocate for workers' interests, express solidarity with other workers, and honour the
accomplishments of workers all around the world.
