My literary character of the moment is undoubtedly Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp, and I personally consider her a heroine. Gifted with a great talent for natural medicine and amateur botany, she is an only child and an orphan, raised by her archaeologist uncle. Claire is a former nurse, warm, practical and independent, married to Frank Randall. After spending a long time apart at the end of World War II, they decide to visit Scotland for a second honeymoon. On the night of Samhain (Halloween) she inadvertently travels back in time and finds herself transported from 1945 to 1743 to the Scottish Highlands in the mid-18th century. There she finds adventure, war and romance with handsome Highlander Jamie Fraser. Smart, headstrong and stubborn, she uses her wits, practical medical skills and knowledge of the future to survive. And this is the most interesting part of the story...how a woman of our century manages to survive the precariousness of such a rudimentary life. Imagine adapting to the times and how women were treated back then. Perhaps I love this character for being very antagonistic to Scarlett O'Hara (another character I love) because we are talking about an independent, modern and intelligent woman challenged to keep her free spirit. Scarlett, on the other hand, is more emotionally dependent and resorts to her charms and manipulation to survive her reality.
