Traditional Outfits of The Ibibio People of AkwaIbom State

Culture is the way a certain group of people go about their normal life, it is expressed in their language, food, celebration, believe and dressing.
I am @manuelhooks from Nigeria, my people are the ibibio people of AkwaIbom state and I will love to show you the dressing aspect of my culture.

AkwaIbom state is located at the southeastern edge of Nigeria. The people of AkwaIbom are culturally related to the Efik people of Crossriver State. Before the 23 of September 1987, AkwaIbom State was a part of Crossriver State and according to AKAG online the population of AkwaIbom State was 3,920,208 as at 2021. Based on its geographical location a climate of AkwaIbom State would be best described as a tropical rainy type with abundant rainfall and very high temperature which affect the type of clothes we put on.
Our traditional wears are mostly light in both colour and weight and cotton is the most preferred fabric which when combined with other fabrics and accessories could be made into splendidly rich and colourful variety.

For Men

Usobo
This is a traditional wrapper worn by topical ibibio men when attending special occasions like traditional marriage and other traditional ceremonies. The Usobo is mainly a large chunk of expensive material that is wrapped around the waist such that one side is ankle high while the other side is knee high.
It is accompanied by a chieftaincy shirt, a beaded boat shaped hat and a flat beaded shoe. A necklaces made of large size beads but most preferably the necklaces would be some of the Usobo material that is used like a tie around the neck and a walking steak to crown it all.
Cost
You will use about 40 thousand Naira to get the full dress and if calculated at 150 pre Steem will amount to 266.667 Steem

For women

In their traditional dress the women look gorgeous and graceful.

Grooming Accessories for Women
The hair is treated with local herbs, plaited and held in segments by large wooden combs and decorated with beads. The face could be decorated with clay.

Onyonyo this stunning flowing gown is often the choice of married women. It is often adorned with some lace and beads/jewels. The dress is frequently worn with beads around the neck as an accessory. Beads made from coral are most preferable.

Costing
You will be spending about 35 thousand Naira to get the full dress and if this cost is calculated at 150 pre Steem, it will amount to 233.334 Steem

Ofod ukod Anwang this is the dress for single ladies. During a traditional marriage, it is worn by the bride and her entourage. The wrapper is tied such that it is knee high with a blouse that is both sleeveless and short, worn with beads around the neck. The hair is traditionally groomed with pompoms around her wrist and ankles. It often goes with no footwear and finally a nicely decorated staff.
Costing
To dress this way, You will spending 35 thousand Naira for the full dress and if this cost is calculated at 150 pre Steem, it will amount to 233.334 Steem

Bacause they are only used occasionally, this cloths can last up to 10 years. The dressing will definitely attract a lot of attention outside my community. But if you can manage the attention, then you can go ahead.
Am still yet to see another culture that dress like the ibibio. But locally we have the Efik people, the Oron people and anang people dressing in a similar way.

Adulterated versions

The ibibio people have adopted some styles from the North some from the East resulting in a new dress called senator.
