Hot news from Nigeria this week as ogbo ogwu, a popular market in onitsha, Anambra state catches fire as a result of chemical explosion.

Earlier this month, on the 8 of november, it had been reported, the incidence of an unexpected fire outbreak at the chemical/surgical line of the ogbo ogwu market. The cause of this outbreak, had been traced to violent reaction of some chemical mixtures which resulted in the instant death of one person.

On seeing the rapid fire, onlookers quickly called the attention of the fire service, who did come to their aid, with water tanks and hoses to contain the situation. ( picture below)

While trying to quench the fire and gather reports of the incidence, the chairman/director of the market in the person of Mr. Chukwulota ndubisi at first, declined to speak to the press saying that they are still trying to quench the fire completely so as not to spread any further to other parts of the market.

The chief of fire service too had a say in the fire outbreak, as he stated that 80 shops were being damaged during the explosion. Also, in his words, he said ;

"A lot of safety measures have been taken to protect the entire market."

Further, he admitted that there were casualties but they weren't certain of the actual number of death and injury cases.

The explosion had caused many damages to goods and properties worth millions of naira. It also caused heavy vibrations to other buildings too close to the explosion area which led to their collapse. As expected, many casualties occurred. Though It was at first recorded three(3) deaths( some of those who died while being rushed to the hospital), but gradually the number kept increasing.

Sadly, more people even died as a result of the collapsed buildings while buying and selling. An old woman too had been trampled to death in the course of escape during the explosion.
Each day, new corpses keep being revealed from different nooks and crannies. As at yesterday, a dead body had been found, whose parts had already started decaying.

Few days after the incidence, Senator stella oduah visited the market. She sympathized with those who had lost their goods, properties and loved ones as a result of the tragic incidence.
She also generously offered some donations to help raise the marketers who lost their possessions to get back on their feet.

Moreso, she appealed to the federal and state governments to come to the immediate aid of these victims of unforseen circumstances. Moved with pity and concern, she had infact aired her plans to establish an Information communication technology mall where 800 youths will be trained to operate the ICT centre to boost the turnover of the market and in effect empower others.

As it stands, the ogbo ogwu drug market in onitsha has been temporarily closed since the unprecedented fire outbreak till date.
