In this article I would like to tell you about a rather special place that I discovered a few years ago, and it is a spiritual retreat in the hills of lower Lake Garda.
We are practically in the municipality of Lonato sul Garda, in the province of Brescia, and this natural site is located right next to the Abbey of Maguzzano, the place from which this complex takes its name.
I know this place because my uncle worked there, he is practically a priest of this order, this is a community where there used to be a school, now it is a place of prayer and meditation.
Practically in the area surrounding the Abbey, there are many olive trees that were planted many years ago, by Cistercian monks, and which are still cultivated today by those who run the community precisely to obtain olive oil.
My uncle has been dead for almost 10 years, and he is practically buried in the cemetery within this community, because the people who belong to this religious order are practically all buried here.
So every now and then my dad and I used to come here, we haven't been here for two years because we couldn't get in because of covid issues.
the cemetery is very special, because there are practically no sumptuous tombs, and no one can personalise the tomb, but all of them are the same there is only a simple picture on the cross, because before God one must be simple and poor.
In recent years, they have done some work here, and have expanded the prayer area, they have practically created a small open-air church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Olive Trees, a place where people come to pray, but many weddings are also celebrated here with the view of Lake Garda.
A place full of strange symbols, but I will certainly do a post about it later, also getting help from my wife who specialises in religious symbolism.
I also made a mini video to show you what this place looks like.👇

Then we headed to the Hermitage, a very isolated place in the midst of olive trees, where people come to stay for a while to do some meditation as well as prayer.
In fact, as we will see in the next photos, the hermitage is equipped both for praying but also for sleeping.
This is the interior, very simple and no comfort!
Below this post, I leave you the official website if you want to maybe pay a visit here just call and let them know, unfortunately I could not visit the Abbey museum because they only give guided tours on Sunday afternoons.
If you are looking for hospitality, maybe this might be useful for someone travelling in Europe, here they are very willing to give you any assistance they can, and they don't want money in return, but maybe you can wash the dishes!!!
