How I spent my New Year's Eve| by @gladys-nanyanga

Hope you are all faring well as the week comes to a close. This week, we have been asked to share how we spent our New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s is pretty crazy in Uganda. The style of celebration varies. In Kampala City and the metropolitan area, the large venues such as Kampala Sheraton Hotel, Pearl of Africa Hotel would set up entertainment by music legends like Afrigo Band to serenade the night away, and thereafter, they would hold a fireworks display.

I would be in the outskirts of Kampala, as my home is situated in Seeta, which is practically in another district. But the nearby hotels like Collin would pull off a similar display. We would watch what was happening on TV as several years ago, it was known that New Year’s in Kampala would get pretty crazy😂. And so as the clock hand reached midnight, we would countdown until zero and then there would be loud shouts of “Happy New Year!!’’ ringing out from the television to the entire neighbourhood. The fireworks would go off at exactly midnight and last for about fifteen minutes.

This year, New Year’s was spent just like last year, lockdown, no fireworks, and worse, the electricity went off too!😱 It came back twenty minutes later. But we still managed to watch the fireworks display all around the world until the clock struck midnight here. We sang, danced and prayed, asking God for direction and to bless this year and for happiness. We went to sleep an hour later.

I woke up at 8 am and helped my mother prepare a heavy breakfast for the rest of the household. The plan was to skip out on lunch as we were to have guests and so we needed adequate time to prepare a late luncheon slash dinner.
We hosted a few of our family friends and made merry for a while. Because of the existing curfew, they had to leave by six pm. My mother, siblings and I then took pictures, which we would later frame and hang up in the Living room as a mark of a New Year and a fresh start.

I am looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store given the wonderful New Year’s Eve we had as a family.
