Egusi ball soup(Ofe Akpurakpu nmgba'm)
In Nigeria we have different regions and different cultures, so also we have different types of food..
Egusi ball soup which is known as "Ofe akpurakpu nmgba'm" is a native soup prepared for occasions like burial ceremony or traditional marriage ceremony.
The soup belongs to a part in the Eastern part of Nigeria known as "Ndi Ngwa and Ndi Umuahia"
It can be served with Eba or Akpu which is any cabohydrate of your choice.
This soup is a very sweet soup that I love enjoying tho it takes much time to prepare it.
How to prepare this lovely native soup
Ingredients
- Ukazi leave
- maggi
- salt.
Lets cook
The most difficult aspect of preparing this soup is preparation of the egusi balls.
step 1
I will put my blended egusi in a motar and add pepper, onions and salt for taste, after that I will continue mashing the melon seed till it starts bring out oil as we can see from the video
and pictures below.
Step 2
Once the oil starts coming out from the melon (egusi) then I will mold it into little little balls and boil it .
Boiling it first before using it for the soup makes it sweeter.
Step 3
The wash and steam your protein with salt and maggi for 10 minutes.
After that add your stock fish and your dry black fish allow them cook for 20 minutes, the add your melon balls, and any thickner of your choice and allow it cook fo more 10 minutes.
Add red palm oil to your taste.
After 45 minutes of cooking, finally add your ukazi leave or bitterleaf or spinach.

Honestly this Ngwa native soup is one of a kind, I believe you all will like to taste it.
Any marriage done in Ngwa land there must be ofe akpurakpu nmgba'm, we are being known for this native soup.
