GUIDELINES FOR USING A COMPASS WHEN TRAVING AND HIRING
Hey friends, have you ever heard of a compass?
Have you ever used it? Maybe there are many communities and alay climbers who don't all understand what a compass is.... So, let's read and understand carefully what a compass is!!!
Compass is used to show the cardinal directions. And for adventurers, must know properly about the compass and its performance. In fact, by knowing and being able to read a map with a compass direction, the chances of getting lost are getting smaller. It is actually important for outdoor activists, but many have not used it for example, such as students who love nature, Scouts, PMI, SAR, and so on which are directed towards basic education and training in navigation science, both land, air, and sea.
Friends, all of these are important parts of Compass:
Dial, is the surface of the compass where the degrees and the cardinal letters are printed.
Visir, is a hole with fine wire to aim at the target.
Magnifying Glass, used to see the degree of the compass.
The Pointing Needle is a tool that points to the North of the Magnet.
Close the Dial with two rotating 45o angled lines.
The latching tool is a place for the thumb to support the compass when aiming.
Now in using a compass we must know how to use and use a compass:
Place the Compass on a flat plane
Equate compass north and map north
a. Aiming at Visir, aiming at the target.
b. Peek the Compass degrees on the Dial.
If Visir is doubtful because it is not clearly visible from the glass
magnifier, align the line on the Dial cover towards Visir, in the direction of the viewfinder so that it is easily seen through the magnifying glass. If the target is 30 degrees, aim for 30 degrees. Before heading to the target, first set the target Point along a 30 degree path. Look for an object that stands out / high among other objects in the vicinity, because the route to 30 degrees is not always flat or dry, sometimes chaotic. That's where we bounce (out of route) by not losing track to 30 degrees.
Before moving in the direction of the aiming target, it is necessary to determine the Back Azimuth or Back Reading so that we can return to base if we get lost on the way.
How to see the Compass and aim at our target using 2 formulas, friends, namely Azimut and Back azimuth.
If the target is less than 180 degrees = plus 180 degrees
0 degrees – 180 degrees = X + 180 degreesIf the target is more than 180 degrees = minus 180 degrees
180 degrees – 360 degrees = X – 180 degrees
That's my friends, a little knowledge from the use of a compass, hopefully it will be of benefit to all of my friends.
