I think the death cases have to go down, the first wave takes the most vulnerable, after these the ones who remain and catch this virus will be stronger and less likely to die, which is what we are seeing now.
This is only true if you have exposure nearing 100% of the population. With large numbers of people isolating themselves, it is unlikely for herd immunity to play much of a role as at any point a the pathogen could reach a vulnerable population that were never exposed to the original outbreak. Eventually it will happen, but with the way governments have reacted to this particular outbreak, it will take a very long time.
