The geographical distribution of the 20 Premier League teams for the 2024-25 season
The 2024-25 Premier League season kicks off tonight. Among the 20 teams in the new season, Newcastle United is the northernmost.
Newcastle United, known as the "Magpies," is based in the Newcastle upon Tyne metropolitan area in Tyne and Wear County. In the Sunderland metropolitan area, we find the familiar "Black Cats" of Sunderland. The matches between Newcastle and Sunderland are known as the Tyne-Wear Derby or the Northeast Derby.
At the southernmost point of England, along the northern coast of the English Channel, there are three Premier League teams: Bournemouth, Southampton, and Brighton. The "Cherries" of Bournemouth are based in Dorset; the "Saints" of Southampton are in Hampshire, where their matches against Portsmouth are referred to as the South Coast Derby or the Hampshire Derby; the "Seagulls" of Brighton are located in East Sussex.
In Southeast England, the county town of Ipswich in Suffolk welcomes the return of the "Tractor Boys." Their matches against Norwich City in Norfolk are known as the East Anglian Derby.
In the Northwest of England, two famous derby rivals are well-known across the UK: the Merseyside Derby and the Manchester Derby. Liverpool, the largest settlement in Merseyside, is home to the "Reds" of Liverpool and the "Toffees" of Everton. To the east of Merseyside is Greater Manchester, where its largest settlement, Manchester, hosts the "Red Devils" of Manchester United and the "Citizens" of Manchester City.
In the Midlands, the Wolverhampton metropolitan area in the West Midlands is home to Wolves, while the Birmingham metropolitan area houses Aston Villa. Birmingham, the second-largest city in the UK, features the Birmingham Derby between Villa and Birmingham City, while Wolves and West Bromwich Albion contest the Black Country Derby.
In the East Midlands, Leicester City is based in Leicestershire, and Nottingham Forest in Nottinghamshire. Their encounters are known as the East Midlands Derby.
The East Midlands is one of the nine official regions of England, with the 20 Premier League teams spread across eight of these regions:
Northeast England: Newcastle United
Northwest England: Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton
Yorkshire and the Humber: None
West Midlands: Aston Villa, Wolves
East Midlands: Nottingham Forest, Leicester City
East of England: Ipswich Town
Southeast England: Southampton, Brighton
Southwest England: Bournemouth
Greater London: Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Brentford
With Sheffield United relegated and Leeds United failing to secure promotion, there will be no Premier League teams from the Yorkshire and the Humber region this season. Greater London continues to have seven Premier League teams.
