Solta island, Croatia
Solta island is only 9 nautical miles away from Split. It’s definitely not a tourist spot I felt like everyone knew everyone and you stood out as a tourist but everyone was super friendly. There isn’t really an easy bus service either, the stops are random places in each town and I didn’t really dare risk it considering I needed to get back on the 8 pm ferry. it’s the one place I’ve been so far that I really feel you need a car to see it all and hit some of the best bays for beaches. I did walk around the island as much as possible but there was so much I couldn’t possibly reach. I managed to see Rogic, Grohote and Donje Selo. The earliest historical records of the island of Šolta date back to the period of Antiquity, when it was first mentioned by the Greek geographer Pseudo-Skylax (4th century BC) as Ὀλύντα (Olynta), and later by Roman writers as Solenta,Solentia,Solentij. The island’s name derives from the Greek word meaning ‘unripe fig’. In 1962 Šolta was merged with the Municipality of Split, hampering some of its development until the Homeland War in mid-1990s when it gave residents the freedom to make their own decisions again and focus on building infrastructure for tourism.
This is how much walking I did! The phone doesn’t really show enough steps either and is quite inaccurate:
