Daybook 16 мая 2003: Life on the square / Жизнь на площади
It was an ordinary May day. Nothing remarkable. Life went on as usual.But unlike other similar days, I got out to the very center of the city.
The geometric center of the city is the projection of the top of the spire of the Main Admiralty on the ground. Approximately at the level of the second floor under this spire there is a room that now has no door. In this room, a copper plate is installed on a pedestal and the city center label is applied on it. The square we are going to visit now is located next to the building of the Main Admiralty and this spire. And if you look at the map... this is actually the center.
If it was raining or a cold north wind was blowing, then I would not be able to show you the life of the Palace Square in this form. The square got its name from the Winter Palace, the walls of which limit the area from the Neva side. Everything is nearby here.
In warm sunny weather, the square turns into one large recreation area. There is no car traffic on the square itself (only horse-drawn carriages for tourists) and people feel free from the rules. Some are even very free. The cobblestone pavement heats up from the sun and many prefer to sit or even lie down. And, of course, most are immersed in gadgets, selfies.
No one pays attention to the person with the camera here. I was completely free to direct it in different directions and at different people (although I didn't do it demonstratively). But everyone here takes pictures of everyone. However, see for yourself.

Это был обычный майский день. Ничего примечательного. Жизнь шла своим чередом.Но в отличии от других похожих дней, я выбрался в самый центр города.
Геометрическим центром города является проекция топа шпиля Главного Адмиралтейства на землю. Примерно на уровне второго этажа под этим шпилем есть комната, которая сейчас не имеет двери. В этой комнате на постаменте установлена медная пластина и на ней нанесена метка центра города. Площадь, на которой мы сейчас побываем, находится рядом со зданием Главного адмиралтейства и этим шпилем. И если смотреть по карте... это фактически центр.
Если бы шёл дождь или дул холодный северный ветер, то я бы не смог показать вам жизнь Дворцовой площади в этом виде. Своё название площадь получила от Зимнего дворца, стены которого ограничивают площадь со стороны Невы. Здесь всё рядом.
В тёплую солнечную погоду площадь превращается в одну большую зону отдыха. По самой площади нет движения авто (только конные экипажи для туристов) и люди чувствуют себя свободными от правил. Некоторые даже очень свободны. Булыжная мостовая нагревается от солнца и многие предпочитают посидеть или даже полежать. И, конечно, большинство погружены в гаджеты, селфи.
На человека с камерой здесь никто не обращает внимания. Я совершенно свободно направлял её в разные стороны и на разных людей (правда, я не делал это демонстративно). Но здесь все фотографируют всех. Впрочем, смотрите сами.
