The Giant Umbrella
From the past, the Baiturrahman Mosque has been a source of pride for the people of Banda Aceh and Acehnese in general. The Banda Aceh City Government continues to fix all the shortcomings after being hit by the Tsunami in 2004, including the giant umbrellas in the courtyard of the mosque which are similar to the Nabawi mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
On normal days, the mosque alternately opens tall umbrellas and short umbrellas on other days. The umbrellas with 12 electric motors apparently only open fully on Fridays to cover the congregation performing Friday prayers. I had the opportunity to witness the opening of the umbrella, from opening to fully expanding. Starting from a higher umbrella, then a lower umbrella.
