Which skill do you want to learn and why?

I remember the first time I heard about digital marketing, it was all Greek to me. However, upon researching a bit, I realized how vital this skill is for any brand or business. That’s why I’m determined to learn digital marketing.

I also understand that digital marketing provides an opportunity to work remotely, meaning I wouldn’t need to go to the office all the time. I’d have the chance to work at my own pace, which appeals to me immensely.

You may wonder why a chemistry student like me needs to learn digital marketing. Why shouldn’t I stay in my field and work related to it? I used to ask myself the same question some time back.

But as I tried to understand, I realized that the importance of digital marketing in our lives has significantly increased. First of all, we all know the internet has turned the world into a global village. Everything, every piece of information, every transaction is just a few clicks away. In this digital world, to present your product, your service, or your brand in the best way, the presence of digital marketing is essential.

Secondly, some people think that digital marketing merely involves social media posts or Google ads. However, in reality, it encompasses much more, like search engine optimization (SEO), email marketing, content marketing, social media management, and many other things. Each one has its significance, and I believe it’s crucial to learn each one. Plus, this field offers numerous job opportunities and allows us to work flexibly and globally. It’s a skill that opens many doors once you learn it. Hence, I want to learn this skill.

As for chemistry, speaking honestly, this degree hasn’t provided me any significant financial benefits so far. Given the rising unemployment and inflation in our country, it has become necessary for us to earn in dollars. That’s why I keep advising my students to explore new fields related to IT. I’m happy to see that many are now shifting from conventional education towards skill-based education.

Recently, I saw a Facebook post from a friend who claimed to have over a million views on a funny animation video he created and shared on TikTok. He and I graduated together with an M.Sc. in chemistry from Punjab University. Now, he runs a YouTube channel where he creates funny animation videos. When I commented on his Facebook post, his response was a bitter truth of our society. He wrote that he had given up teaching chemistry because our nation prefers entertainment and fun over education.

Yes, I’m currently learning this skill. I’ve enrolled in Google’s digital marketing program on the Coursera platform for this. The program consists of a total of seven courses, out of which I’ve already completed four and three are left. I hope to finish them all within the next four months. You can check the details of this program on the Coursera website. Although it’s a paid course, I was lucky to get enrolled with financial aid.

What is the scope of that skill?

In the world of digital marketing, the scope is quite bright. The reason for this is that everyone is using the internet these days. People shop online, search for information online, and entertain themselves online. That’s why there has been a significant increase in the scope of digital marketing.

Firstly, if we talk about jobs, every company that wants to increase its online presence is looking for digital marketers. Whether it’s a small business or a multinational corporation, everyone needs digital marketing. That’s why there’s a high demand for people with digital marketing skills.

There are different roles in digital marketing where job opportunities are available. Such as SEO specialist, social media manager, content marketer, email marketing specialist, and digital marketing analyst. If we’re skilled in digital marketing, we can fit into any of these roles.

On the other hand, having digital marketing skills also allows usto start our own business. We can become a freelancer and work on projects for different companies. Or we can even start our own digital marketing agency.

Another interesting thing about digital marketing is that it gives us the opportunity to work globally. We can work for a company in any part of the world while sitting in any country. I believe this creates many opportunities for our career.

How you will benefit from this skill?

Learning digital marketing skills can provide me with many benefits. Firstly, it’ll make me an expert in a highly demanded field. As I mentioned earlier, every company wants to have an online presence, and they need digital marketers for this. So, if I acquire this skill, my chances of getting a job will increase significantly.

The second benefit will be that it’ll give me the opportunity to work flexibly. Digital marketing is a field where you can work remotely from home. This means I won’t have to go to the office and can work from my comfort zone.

The third benefit will be that it’ll give me global exposure. It’ll give me experience in the international market and familiarize me with different cultures and trends. Plus, in digital marketing, you have to constantly learn. Because technology and trends are constantly changing. But that’s a good thing because it keeps your skill set updated and gives you the opportunity to learn new things.

So, I think learning digital marketing skills can provide me with many benefits. It can take me from job opportunities to entrepreneurship. That’s why I want to learn this skill. I’m confident that it’ll provide me with both professional and personal growth. 🙂
