Parental discipline is a controversial subject all over the world. There are many views and opinions about how to discipline and guide a child. To make matters worse, we have a lot of books by self acclaimed experts who are not even parents as to how best to raise a child.

I have also observed that parenting differs from tradition to tradition, country to country and in most cases, economic situation of a family can also determine the type of parenting a child will receive.

This weeks contest entitled Parent's Strict Behavior and Children's Mental Health will.go a long way in exploring the effects of strict parental training on the children's mental health.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of parents strict behaviour?

Advantages

° Children coming from homes with strict parenting tends to be well behaved. Reason being that they have clear set rules to follow a laid down rule by their parents, including expected behaviour from them.

However, most of this behaviour are driven by the need to avoid the consequences of not meeting up with the expectation. Nevertheless, it helps the children to be guided during their adolescent years.

° The children raised under such conditions usually have a high expectation about themselves. This seeming expectations drives them to achieve any targets they decide to achieve.

° Strict parenting teaches children the importance of accountability, responsibility for any action they take. This helps them to make reasonable decisions knowing that they are responsible for their inactions.

° Parents who are strict consciously instill time management and organisational skill into their children.

° it teaches the children the expensive quality of self control and self discipline. This helps them to manage their challenges and their emotions.

° It prepares the children for the difficult task of leaving the real life when they leave home. The need to be dogged, resilient and persevering in whatever endeavor they go into. This inturn helps them to be successful in life.

Disadvantages

° One of the disadvantages is that the children will become emotionally distant from their parents in most cases. This will lead to not having an open communication, warmth and feeling within their families.

° Being strict hinders the child from developing the skill of decision making and the ability to learn from their own experience.

Most strict parents usually criticize their children, this erodes their self confidence and esteem, making them feel incapable of handling some situations.

° In a bit to please their strict parents, the children suffers from increased anxiety and stress as they arrive to avoid making mistakes and bearing the effect of their failure.

° It can give rise to rebellion, disobedience to their parents. They may feel being shut without the ability to express themselves freely.

What do you feel if you were at the place of such childrens who have to face strictness?

I was once a child and know what it means to be raised up under an umbrella of love, care attention and warm affection.

I know how difficult it is also to be with a strict guardian, I had a firsthand experience too. Despite their strictness, I still remained obedience to them and did my best to work within their boundaries. I learned to adapt to their way of training and that helped me a lot in coping with them.

So even though I may be caged in, but will still be obedient to them.

As a child, what do you expect from your parents regarding their behavior?

Ordinarily, every child expects their parents to dance to their whims and caprices. They don't expect to be told No to their requests from them.

I expect them to be loving, caring and give attention to my needs. I also expect them to be firm in there decisions that affects me for my own well being.

What are the negative effects of emotional blackmailing?

There are many negative effects of emotional blackmailing. Some of the effects are listed below.

° Such blackmail can lead to excessive guilt on the victim's part.

° It can lead to the individual feeling insecure and incapable of handing tasks.

° It can get to the point where the self esteem and dignity of the person is seriously affected and undermined.

° The individuals will always want to be on the receiving side in order to make peace and avoid conflicts.

° It will cause the person to try and become a perfectionist. Always trying to do everything right.

° The individual will feel abandoned, increased self doubt and always prone to anger and unwarranted fear.

Conclusion

It is good to strike a balance between being strict and being loose when it comes to parenting.

In most cases, the child in question and the way he or she reacts to a particular type of parenting determines the type of parenting to be administered as each child is unique in every way.

Hence, parents need to consider the mental health of their children when carrying out their duties as parents.
