The upcoming version of the operating system that drives iPhones, iOS 18, has been unveiled by Apple. An outline of the new features in the upcoming version can be seen here.

Apple has stated that iOS 18 will be made available as a free software update for iPhone Xs and later this fall. Numerous new features and improvements are included, such as enhanced personalization options, satellite message sending capabilities, ChatGPT and other AI functions, and what the firm claims is the largest-ever makeover of the Photos app.

Users of iPhones running iOS 18 can now position widgets and apps on the Home Screen in any available location, including directly above the dock. Moreover, you can enlarge and apply a dark or tinted effect to give app icons and widgets a new appearance.

Control Center has been revamped to offer easier swiping between your most frequently used functions, including media playback, connectivity, and Home controls. Additionally, users can now add controls to Control Center from third-party apps that are compatible.

You will be able to change the controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen for the first time. You can select from a gallery of alternatives or take them out completely.

The redesigned Photos app in iOS 18 offers a streamlined, single view with the well-known grid, and new collections facilitate theme browsing. You may also pin collections to maintain easy access to your favorites.

A fresh carousel view showcases daily updated highlights, including cherished individuals, animals, locations, and more. The Photos app's autoplay feature makes libraries come to life and slows down browsing experiences.

All-new text effects that enhance any letter, word, phrase, or emoji with animation will be available in iMessage. Additionally, users can apply formatting such as strikethrough, bold, underlining, and italics.

According to the business, the Messages app now supports the RCS (Rich Communication Services) protocol for delivering messages to contacts who do not own Apple devices. This allows for richer media and "more reliable group messaging" as compared to SMS and MMS.

In iOS 18, satellite messaging is added for situations where Wi-Fi and cellular networks are unavailable. In order to send and receive messages, emoji, and tapbacks via iMessage and SMS, Messages via Satellite instantly prompts users to connect to their closest satellite straight from the Messages app; SMS availability will depend on your wireless carrier and fees may apply.

The main attraction of the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference keynote address, the "Apple Intelligence" revelation, promises a plethora of new AI-enabled capabilities.

With iOS 18's new writing tools, you can edit, proofread, and summarize text "nearly everywhere" on the iPhone, including in third-party apps, Mail, Notes, and Pages.

The new Image Playground allows you to create "playful images" by selecting from three styles: animation, illustration, or sketch. It will be available as a stand-alone app and as a feature in other apps, such as Messages.

By typing a description, Memories in the Photos app allows you to create stories. According to Apple, the software then compiles images and videos into a "movie with its own narrative arc." A brand-new Clean Up tool can now locate and eliminate "distracting" elements from picture backgrounds.

ChatGPT from OpenAI will be incorporated into Siri and the system-wide Writing Tools on all Apple devices.
