In 2023, it seems like everyone was ready for the future and then, the future arrived. Technologies that people once only dreamed about was now made accessible to everyone at their fingertips. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, autonomous vehicles, CRISPR which is the list of unprecedented technologies goes on and on.

One of the most game changing technologies for retail in 2023 is Augmented reality. Augmented Reality empowers customers with the ability to visualize and customize products in 3D when shopping.

Allowing customers engage through the shopping process is becoming increasingly competitive. With AR, retailers can
discover new ways to compete with an entirely new customer experience that leads to higher sales and customer satisfaction.

It was gathered that By the end of 2023, there will be 1.4 billion AR device users and this was the news that got me wondering and cracking my head on how to dive in my expertise to find a good purpose.

There were speculations about several development delays in sending some hardwares to the market. It seems for now the primary focus of AR will be on smartphones.

As an experienced product designer, delving into the realm of augmented reality (AR) this year has been nothing short of transformative for both my career and sense of purpose. AR has opened new dimensions in design, enabling me to create immersive and interactive experiences that transcend traditional boundaries. Learning about AR has allowed me to create designs that go beyond the confines of screens. By integrating virtual elements into the real world, I've been able to enhance user engagement significantly. I am still learning and we keep discovering ourselves till we find the best fit for our purpose.

AR technology also allows products to respond intelligently to the environment, providing users with a more personalized and context-aware experience. This has added a layer of sophistication to my designs, making them more adaptive and user-centric. The exploration of AR has encouraged me to think beyond traditional design paradigms. It has challenged me to consider how digital and physical worlds can seamlessly coexist. This expansion of design horizons has injected a renewed sense of creativity and innovation into my work.

Looking forward to 2024, I anticipate several advancements in augmented reality that will further shape the design landscape such as;

Improved Hardware: I expect continued advancements in AR hardware, with more lightweight, powerful, and affordable devices entering the market. This will democratize access to AR experiences and expand the potential user base.

Advanced Spatial Mapping: Enhancements in spatial mapping technology will contribute to more accurate and realistic AR experiences. This will enable designers to create products that seamlessly integrate with the physical environment, offering users a heightened sense of immersion.

AI-driven Interactions: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with AR will lead to more intelligent and context-aware interactions. This fusion will enable AR applications to better understand user behavior, preferences, and surroundings, allowing for more personalized and anticipatory design solutions.
