3 Days Without Electricity Contest

A very interesting contest from @steemdoctor1, and one I know many Steemians will feel deeply about, as I know many of us come from third world countries where energy in the form of is not as stable as one would want. This is especially so in this season at least in Honduras where I live, the dry season has wreaked havoc on our hydro energy sources so the energy supply is diminished. Energy in this country is under the control of ENEE, a public company that is at the moment controlled by a Colombian company named EEH. Perhaps controlled is not the right word, these guys are like in charge of a lot of the work that was formerly done by ENEE. Their contract, luckily, runs out soon. Luckily because they make a lot of money but the energy grid has seen no improvements.

Now on to the contest questions:

How often do you face the problem of electric power shut down in your area?

Things got critical a few weeks back, even before that we had blackouts but on an irregular basis. This changed at the end of May when things got critical and the utility company decided to schedule the blackouts. Where I live, we have numbered circuits, each one of these was scheduled to have a four hour daily shut down. This was terrible, especially when it happened at midnight, the heat is unbearable and you can't even go outside because it is also mosquito season. But rainfall has started to show up and blackouts were shortened to 2 hours. In fact my neighborhood has not had a blackout for several days.

What activities would you do if there is an electric failure in your country for 3 days?

Actually, if that happens, there is not much we can do, except maybe invest in solar panels, but that is too expensive for most people. No, we would have to bear it as good as we can. Now for me, in spite of now being used to electricity all day, it would not be so bad. After all I grew up in places where electricity was just on for a few hours at night, so we had no fan, no a/c and we didn't buy too much in perishable goods. This makes me think I could grow used to it, the only problem is that it is certainly hotter nowadays than say forty years ago.

What are the major problems or issues that you will face in 3 days electric failure?

As I said before we would have to cut down on perishable goods, and also do without internet, tv and other conforts. But really the big deals would be the heat and nothing to calm it down with, plus this being a midsize city we would face water problems as this runs mostly on electric pumps.

But I don't think we will see that happen this year, we already are getting rain for the dams, and we are getting more fossil fuel power generating plants. But we do have to understand that we could face weeklong power outages in the future. I think the best solution here is solar panels, sunlight being a commodity we certainly have a lot of.
