A view from an unexpected place

Can you guess where this picture was taken? This photo was taken in an unexpected place along the Van Hoevenberg Trail in NY State. Keep reading to find out where. The Van Hoevenberg Trail is located in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondacks, and connects hikers from the Adirondack Loj to Marcy Dam, and eventually the summit of Mt. Marcy. The Adirondack Log is a public parking lot access point for hikers looking to hike Mt. Marcy, the highest mountain in NY State.

Mt Marcy, known to the indigenous people as TAHAWUS , meaning cloudsplitter has a peak elevation of 5,344'. Marcy dam is a picturesque pond nestled in the foot hills of Mt. Marcy. Marcy Dam is only accessible by hiking, and requires skis or snowshoes in the winter months.

From Marcy Dam the trail begins its accent of Mt. Marcy paralleling Phelps Brook and then eventually Marcy Brook.

The trail continues onward above the treeline towards the summit. The summit was very icy on our summit day and required crampons to traverse. One of are fellow climbers said the ice was as hard as rock, and i would tend to agree. All this difficulty would soon be rewarded with the best view in NY State and coincidentally the best cell service to phone our loved ones.

So back to the original question. Where was this photo taken. This photo was taken looking outward from an outhouse along the trail. Like many others I hate using an outhouse, but it is a little more pleasant when you have a great view and some ventilation.
