Lilium candidum, lily or lily, is a herbaceous perennial plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family.

The genus Lilium includes about a hundred species, typical of the temperate zones of the boreal hemisphere. Among them is the already mentioned Lilium candidum, which is a plant native to Syria and Palestine, provided with large white flowers and a penetrating smell. Due to the whiteness of its flowers, it has become synonymous with purity and in this sense it has been incorporated into popular tradition.

Description:

  • It has a bulbous underground stem and a herbaceous aerial stem, provided with numerous leaves.

  • Apparent flowers, hermaphrodites, actinomorphic, and trimers; located at the termination of the scape or herbaceous stem, they present a perianth of six white tepals, free from each other, provided with nectaries.

  • Androecium formed by six stamens and a gynoecium of a super ovary (the other whorls are inserted into the receptacle below that one: hypogine flowers), tricarpellate and pluriovulate.

  • The fruit is a capsule of loculicidal dehiscence. Ripe seeds are pale in color.
