During a series of excavations in Zimbabwe starting in 2017, the fossil of the oldest dinosaur ever discovered in Africa and one of the oldest ever discovered in Africa was found. It is a small sauropodomorph - a group of dinosaurs to which the giant "long necks" belong - that lived about 235 million years ago , in the Late Triassic , when a single huge supercontinent known as Pangaea existed on Earth . The first remains of the fossil emerged five years ago in the thriving Pebbly Arkose Formation in the north of the African country, but excavation work was only completed today, also due to the COVID-19 pandemic that hampered the movements of paleontologists.
