The humanoid robot that prepares skewers for you




Chinese researchers showcased a humanoid robot capable of learning—in just six days of training—how to prepare meat skewers and hand-stretch dough in front of an audience. Food preparation requires far more than simply repeating programmed movements: each piece of meat varies in size, weight, and resistance; dough changes its elasticity as it is handled; and heat continuously alters the behavior of the ingredients. To meet this challenge, engineers developed a system combining computer vision, force control, and high-precision tactile sensors, enabling the robot to adapt its movements in real time.


During demonstrations in China's Xinjiang province, the humanoid proved capable of assembling and grilling meat skewers without deforming the ingredients. Its arms and fingers work in synchronization while sensors continuously monitor the force applied to each food item; rather than executing rigid movements, the artificial intelligence automatically adjusts pressure and speed based on the shape and resistance of each piece.




The most impressive challenge arose during the preparation of traditional hand-pulled noodles. This technique relies on sensing the precise moment when the dough can be stretched without breaking; to achieve this, the robot employs an array of tactile sensors distributed across its hands—capable of measuring minute pressure variations in multiple directions—which feed data into an artificial intelligence system that constantly recalculates arm movements to maintain optimal tension during the stretching process.


All this training was completed in just six days, yet the demonstration marks only the beginning. Each prepared dish generates thousands of new data points regarding soft-object manipulation, motor coordination, and interaction with real-world environments; this information can be used to develop domestic robots, assistive systems, hospitality services, and even platforms to compete in the World Humanoid Robot Games—an international competition focused on the practical capabilities of humanoid robots.
