Astrobotic announced the opening of its innovative LSPG and facility in Mojabe California, this high-fidelity test field measuring approximately 100 by 100 m is designed to replicate the topography and optical properties of the lunar surface with incredible precision.

Using the real map of the South Pole of the moon generated through astrobotic's advanced Luna Ray terrain modeling and simulation tools the LSPG stands out for its authenticity, this test field will be fundamental for a wide variety of experiments and developments of technologies, including LiDAR scanners, navigation algorithms, lunar rovers and other robotic systems, plus the LSPG is capable of simulating the extreme lighting conditions found at the lunar poles, offering an unparalleled testing environment for sensor and spacecraft systems.

The LSPG had its origins with tests from several winning teams of NASA's 2023-2024 TechRise Student Challenge. This challenge involved 30 teams of sixth through twelfth grade students from all over the United States. Student experiments ranged from terrain mapping and detection of lunar craters using LiDAR and AI image processing to water detection and thermal mapping with infrared cameras.

On June 21 the first 15 student payloads successfully flew over the LSPG aboard the Zodiac marking the beginning of a new era of educational experimentation, in addition the test field will be used for this year's nighttime precision leading challenge organized by NASA, universities such as San Diego State University and companies such as Drepper and Astrobotic itself also have test activities planned on the Zodiac in the coming months.

Bedford highlighted the importance of involving young people in these innovative projects saying “enabling students, the next generation of engineers and rocket scientists to be the first customers to use LSPG is exciting for our team, our mission is to make space accessible to the world and this unique testing ground is another big step toward making that goal a reality,” “astrobotic's LSPG not only represents a technological advancement but also an unprecedented educational opportunity preparing future generations for space exploration and contributing to continued advancement.” of space technologies.
