Martians for a year, what it's like to live on Mars

NASA simulated what it would be like to live a year on Mars and the mission has just come to an end when a four-member team emerged from its base after a year of isolation here on Earth, the four volunteers spent just over 12 months inside of NASA's first simulated Mars environment at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The brave explorers Kelly Haston, Anca Selariu, Ross Brockwell and Nathan Jones began this incredible study on June 25, 2023 with the first team of NASA's CHAPEA project, this project is an essential preparation for future missions on Mars in the environment of 157 square meters, the Quartet lived and worked simulating a mission to Mars, they carried out simulated external walks known as Mars walks.

They also grew and harvested vegetables to supplement their provisions and kept the habitat and equipment functioning perfectly, all with the aim of establishing realistic conditions for future operations on Mars while facing challenges such as limited resources, extreme isolation and communication delays of up to 22 minutes. with the land.

In the brief welcome ceremony Kelly Haston, the mission commander began with a simple “Hello Nathan Jones”, the mission doctor and health officer reflected on the time of confinement saying “378 days went by quickly”, Steve Corner deputy director of the Johnson Space Center highlighted the mission's focus on nutrition and its effects on performance, mentioning that the work done was crucial science as we prepare to send people to the red planet.

The four volunteers shared valuable ideas about a possible manned Mars mission and life here on Earth, the scientific officer addressed the fixation on Mars saying “why go to Mars, because it is possible, because space can unite and bring out the best in us, it is a decisive step that the Earthlings will take to illuminate the path for the coming centuries.”

This milestone is a giant step in humanity's journey to explore the cosmos by showing how we can prepare for the challenges of life on Mars and beyond, an exciting mission that certainly lights the flame of curiosity and the spirit of exploration in everyone. fans.
