It all starts with curiosity, Calabi-Yau manifolds, and string theory.

The Kalabi-Yau variety is very important for understanding string theory. I don't think anyone can fully understand it, least of all me, because I'm not a quantum physicist, But string theory is a hypothesis that was created to make general relativity physics, which studies larger things such as the gravity of planets, compatible with quantum physics, which explains the world of very small particles and says that even the most elementary particles such as a proton or an electron are actually vibrations of filaments or quantum strings.

These strings are absolutely tiny, of course, don't imagine the strings of a guitar, the two most basic strings are the open string and the closed string.

But for quantum physics to make sense and be compatible with the rest of physics, there would have to be six more dimensions apart from the three we have and the fourth, which is time. However, those six dimensions would be very small and would be intertwined with the others, creating a somewhat strange structure. The Calabi-Yau figure contains precisely those six compacted dimensions.
