Concurso fotográfico semana #30 - "Flores"

Marigold have deep childhood nostalgia with every Bengali. It is our own flower. Though it is a seasonal flower, it starts blooming in Autumn and continue till Spring which is very important span for any Hindu Bengali.

During this period important fastivals like Durga Puja, Laxmi Puja, Kali Puja (coince with Dewali when rangolis of flower Marigold are made), Bhaidooj , Jagadhatri Puja, Christmas, Saraswati Puja, Shivaratri, Chandi Puja and finally fastival of colour (when girls and ladies do hair decoration with marigold flowers garland) are celebrated when marigold is the most predominantly used as deities' garland and decoration.

We are used to chant mantra for each Godess holding flowers in hand which is offered to the deity called puspanjali. Marigold is the flower without which no one enjoys chanting and offering puspanjali. Actually the smell and feel of touch of marigold brings serenity and sanctity of mind.

I think any Bengali get acquainted to Marigold even before Rose and Lotus. In my picture two most common available colours are seen. It is not a personal garden. It is a nursery called Pratima Nursery which I visited last month. Any garden in Bengal will be incomplete without marigold. Every house hold will bring one plant to bloom a marigold flower at home. There are a by clour hybrid which normally people avoid for worship.

One of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram at Neempith which is Kandiya Vikash Krishi Kandar (Central Agricultural and Horticulture Centre) of the district South 24 Parganas of West Bengal have best seeds to grow Marigold flowers.
