What she actually did was to use the contours of the bark of the tree to form the figures. In between she removed the bark.
Very clever and very unique. This she did way back in 1931-1934.

In the 70's the trunk was taken out of the ground and chemically treated to get rid of any decay. It is now mounted on concrete with a fence around it.
