Part of the immediate punishment on the wicked city of Nineveh and the entire Assyrian was to be implemented through a foreign attacker. Vs.1 and 3-5 give out a call for the defence of the city, but their story is that of desolation and woe as their defence collapses (vs.6ff). Vs.11-12 are a mockery of the Assyrian imperial symbol of the lion, and their goddess, Ishtar, often depicted as a lioness. While the Assyrian empire is called upon to defend itself (which it couldn't!).

Notice what the Lord is going to do for Jacob (Israel) in vs.2. Other men of God in the past have been encouraged by the knowledge that God is on their side. See 2Chronicles 32:7-8 for Hezekiah's example as he faced the same Assyrian army many years before Nahum.

All who are positions of power should learn a lesson from Nineveh's fall. In the day that the Lord came to settle accounts with men, every man will receive his due as in vs.7-10.

Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
