CHRIST’S SACRIFICE

The word “atonement” means the act that provide or make possible our salvation and reconciliation between God and us. Christ suffered and died on the cross of Calvary as a sacrificial lamb to take away our sins. In John 1:29, through His atonement, we are reconciled, or brought back to God and the penalty of our sins was cancelled.

Taking into consideration the book of Isaiah 53:4-9, can you imagine all He suffered in order to set us free? Remember that the wages of sin is more than this physical death, because it includes rejection, curse, sorrow, sickness, poverty and eternal death. Christ suffered all these because of His love for us. He did not wish for us to continue suffering in our iniquity without a way out.

The Word of God stated that the soul that sinneth should die; Ezekiel 18:20. Therefore, there was a need for Christ to die in the place of sinners, if they must live to enjoy God’s forgiveness and pardon for their sins. God’s holiness cannot overlook sin. Therefore, the price must be fully paid; just like there is a consequence for every action, be it good or bad. God’s law reflects his nature and so it is necessary for Him to require punishment from the offenders.

It was also necessary for him to die so that through his death the enmity between God and us as a result of our sins will be removed and the gap of separation between God and man bridged. Through His death, Christ brought us closer to God’s embrace. Through His death, Christ has satisfied these conditions and the door has been declared open for fellowship with God again. If Christ has suffered all these for us, what type of sacrifice is too great for us to make for him?
