Evangelizing the poor.

Christ was able to take the highest place among the teachers of the Jewish people; but he chose "to preach the gospel to the poor." He walked from one place to another so that people in the streets and alleys could hear the word of truth. On the seashore, on the side of a mountain, in the streets of the city, in the synagogues, his voice was everywhere that explained the Scriptures. He taught in the outer court of the temple so that the Gentiles could hear his words.

Christ's teaching was so different from the scriptural explanation given by the scribes and Pharisees that it caught people's attention. The rabbis lived in detail on human traditions, theories, and assumptions. Often what people taught and wrote about Scripture was put in the place of Scripture itself.

But the subject of Christ's teaching was the Word of God. He proclaimed the gospel message with clarity and power. His words shed abundant light on the teachings of the patriarchs and prophets, and the Scriptures were presented to people as new. revelation: Never before have your listeners seen such profound meaning in the Word of God.

There has never been a preacher like Christ before. He was the Lord of heaven, but he humbled himself and accepted our nature to find people in the position they are in. Christ, the messenger of the covenant, carried the message of salvation to all people: rich and poor, free and slave.

Then Christ, the King of glory in a humble image of a man, went from city to city, from town to town, preaching the Gospel and healing the sick.

Christ, the highest of all teachers, sought access to people who used the most familiar ideas. He revealed the truth to them in such a way that it remained in his memory forever connected to the heart's most cherished feelings and memories.

Christ taught in such a way that they felt he fully understood what his interests and happiness consisted of. His teachings were so clear, his examples so marked, his words so full of sympathy and encouragement that the listeners were fascinated. The simplicity and sincerity with which he addressed those in need sanctified every word he spoke.

From day to day Christ, he could be seen in modest houses of need and pain, where he spoke words of hope to the downcast and words of the world to the exhausting. He walked full of mercy, courtesy and compassion, elevating the spirit of the downcast and comforting the suffering. Everywhere, wherever he went, he brought blessings with him.

Jesus talked to the crowds in parables. He taught his disciples plainly.

(Matthew 13:10-16 NIV) The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?" {11} He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. {12} Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. {13} This is why I speak to them in parables: "Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. {14} In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: "'You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. {15} For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.' {16} But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.

We don't know how many disciples Jesus had but Luke refers to 72 disciples that he sent out to preach and perform miracles.

(Luke 10:1 NIV) After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.
